Earth Built

HAGS: Jas robertson, Josephine O'Connor, Freya Martin

Created in the Glen, Earth Built is a space dedicated to a series of engaging workshops that will focus on ways of working with raw earth and clay. Using local clay sourced from nearby burns and rivers, along with coppiced hazel and willow, participants will explore traditional techniques and creative expression.

Workshop 1: Painting with Pigments
Participants will have the opportunity to create art using various rock and clay pigments sourced from Scotland, painting on canvases or lime plastered surfaces. The themes will include imagery from nature, such as trees, mushrooms, and mycelium, alongside poetic expressions inspired by the forest.

Workshop 2: Wattle and Daub Building
This workshop will introduce participants to the heritage technique of wattle and daub, allowing them to weave willow and shape mud into walls, shelves, and windows—all while enjoying a hands-on experience.

Workshop 3: Burnishing Earth
Attendees will learn the intricate art of crafting doridangos (polished earth balls) and applying burnished finishes to clay, enhancing their skills in working with earth materials.

The shelter provides a space for engagement, with shelves and nooks to leave the natural treasures of our surroundings, reminiscent of a 'Cabinet of Curiosities.' The workshops will be scheduled to run for 2-4 hours each afternoon in a beautiful woodland setting as a unique exploration of earth-based art and connectivity with nature.
