Maya Carolissen’s work primarily focuses on metal due to its sonic potential and responsiveness to environmental forces. Her artwork for The Neverending Glen engages with the sonic agency of the landscape, utilising invisible atmospheric currents as the sole performer of the sculpture. The artworks features steel chimes that produce sounds, including hums and moans reminiscent of a distant siren, allowing the composition to emerge organically within the natural landscape. This work aims to create a mode of authorship where the environment itself generates form, rhythm, and meaning.

Carolissen views the sculptures as an initial step into exploring the sonic characteristics of the natural world, envisioning future iterations to form a dispersed field of sculptures. These sculptures would appear in various natural settings, such as protruding from the ground, nestled within bushes, or suspended from trees, thereby creating a sonic space independent of human control. Two works will exist within a festival context, serving as a reminder of the Earth’s sounds and the atmospheric layers that surround us, encouraging an attentive listening across ecological registers and fostering a sense of interconnectedness with the environment.
