Martha Williams

Martha Williams is a Glasgow/ London based artist and maker, currently working as a metal fabricator in a workshop. Her practice engages with a range of technical processes, combining traditional craft and construction techniques with contemporary sculpture. She explores how made objects can become uncanny subversions of themselves, containing the potential for playful narrative and performance while disrupting expectations of form and functionality. Often influenced by folklore and oral narrative traditions, she is interested in the conditions under which the familiar can become strange and in offering ways of retelling what is known. She approaches building and making as inherently social practices—ways to collaborate, exchange knowledge, and reimagine the built environment through shared labour and care. She is increasingly drawn to land-based work, which offers opportunities to situate my practice within a broader context and to look to the elements and folk histories of the land for direction.
